Abersoch RNLI Sponsored Bike Ride 2017

Plans are now prepared for this year’s Abersoch RNLI Sponsored Bike Ride.  As in previous years, this is a non-competitive cycling event starting and finishing in the centre of Abersoch at The Vaynol.  All money raised from the event will go towards Abersoch RNLI fundraising.

The ride will be on Sunday 1st October and riders will be able to start at any time, of their choosing, between 9:00 and 11:00am, so put it in your diaries now.

There are four routes: a 40 mile route, with 3,067 feet of climbing, for experienced cyclists; a shorter 30 mile route, with 2,342 feet of climbing, for those seeking less of a challenge; and two shorter routes of 15 or 9½ miles, for families and those looking for an easier ride.

All routes are tried and tested by local riders and designed around our beautiful North West Wales Llŷn peninsula and were planned to accommodate the riding abilities of all participants.

There is be an individual entry fee of £10 with a requirement to raise at least £15 in sponsorship, or for families (2 adults and 2 children) an entry fee of £15 with a requirement to raise a minimum of £25 in sponsorship.  We hope that all entrants will raise as much money as possible to support the wonderful volunteers who man our lifeboat in all weathers.  All those who finish the course will receive a commemorative t-shirt, medal and slate coaster.

Abersoch RNLI New Year’s Day Dip 20171st of Jan 2017

Abersoch main beach will again be the place to be on New Year’s Day to get rid of your hangover by rushing into the sea for the annual Abersoch RNLI New Year’s Day dip. This year the fancy dress theme is ‘THE CIRCUS’. We are looking forward to seeing the usual imaginative interpretations of the theme, with clowns, acrobats, circus animals and trainers dashing across the beach.
Let’s make an heroic effort to raise as much money as possible, as all money raised will go directly to the RNLI to help ensure that our local crew can be equipped with the best equipment, clothing and training when they go out to sea in any weather. IMPORTANT INFO: It is expected that if you join the Dip you will raise some money for the crew, who will be on and in the water at the event to look after everybody’s safety, so to take part a sponsorship form is needed. Forms are available in the village at Abersoch Boatyard and Abersoch Watersports shop or can be downloaded by clicking here.
As usual the Dip will take place on the main beach at 12 noon prompt, and children will go in a couple of minutes before the adults. Hot drinks will be given to all dippers, in the beach café after the Dip.
Last year around 500 brave souls went into the sea, supported by around 2,000 spectators, so it is essential that you allow sufficient time to get through these crowds and the resultant traffic to get onto the beach before 12 o’clock. Each year we have seen disappointed people who didn’t manage to arrive in time for the Dip; we cannot delay the event as it would leave people waiting in the cold.

Abersoch RNLI Sponsored Bike Ride - Oct 2016Tuesday 19th July 2016

Abersoch RNLI Sponsored Bike Ride
The Abersoch RNLI Sponsored Bike Ride is a non-competitive cycling event that starts and finishes in the centre of Abersoch village. All money raised from the event will go towards Abersoch RNLI fundraising.

This will be the second time that Abersoch RNL has run a sponsored bike ride and we have taken on board comments and feedback received from the first event to make the event more attractive to keen cyclists.

The ride will be on Sunday 2nd October and will start and finish in the centre of Abersoch village. Riders will be able to start at any time, of their choosing, between 9:00 and 11:00am. We will now offer four routes: a 40 mile route, with 3,067 feet of climbing, for experienced cyclists; a shorter 30 mile route based on last year’s route, with 2,342 feet of climbing, for those seeking less of a challenge; and two shorter routes of 15 or 9½ miles, for families and those looking for an easier ride.

All routes are tried and tested by local riders and designed around the beautiful North West Wales Llŷn peninsula and were planned to accommodate the riding abilities of all participants. The roads selected and quality of surfaces were based on a comprehensive risk assessment and are suitable for group riding purposes, which will cause minimum inconvenience to all other road users. This in turn makes the ride more pleasant for participants, but also limits the impact of the event in the surrounding area. The route and event timings have been designed to ensure that wherever possible there are low traffic volumes.

All those who finish the course will receive a commemorative t-shirt and slate coaster.

Across four episodes, Saving Lives At Sea tells the story of these ordinary men and women who are doing something extraordinary, putting their free time to use by staffing more than 200 RNLI lifeboat stations right across the UK and providing a vital rescue service on Britain’s waters.
Look out for some of our crew featuring in the new BBC1 Program "Saving Lives at Sea". BBC 1 at 9pm 13th July http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07l1z87

New Abersoch RNLI lifeboat to be officially dedicated16th of April 2016

RNLI volunteers at Abersoch are looking forward to an exciting day in the station’s history as their new Atlantic 85 lifeboat is named. The Atlantic 85, which arrived on station in October last year, is powered by two 115hp engines and has a stronger hull and greater top speed. The lifeboat has been funded by a bequest from Mrs Ann Constance Setten from Shropshire, who was an RNLI supporter during her lifetime, and is named after her and her husband Peter.

During the ceremony the lifeboat will be named Peter and Ann Setten by two of Mrs Setten’s relatives - her niece Liz Badman and her great niece Sarah Flook.

Liz Badman said she is looking forward to travelling to Abersoch for the ceremony.

‘My aunt always loved anything to do with boats, the sea and the Navy and she also had an interest in the lifeboats from her childhood holidays in Teignmouth in 1920s and early 30s,’ she said.

The arrival of the lifeboat last year was a momentous occasion for the station, after she was given the seal of approval by HRH The Duke of Kent. His Royal Highness was touring the area and had the opportunity to view the newly arrived Atlantic 85.

The lifeboat, which will replace the station’s outgoing Atlantic 75 lifeboat, is able to carry a fourth crew member, whilst also having improved space for kit.

Lee Firman, RNLI Divisional Operations Manager for the RNLI in north Wales says: ‘The Atlantic 85 has some impressive features such as the added radar, which allows the crew to operate more effectively in poor visibility and she also has VHF direction-finding equipment. The lifeboat has already been called out to a number of rescue missions and we are confident it will help the volunteer crew to save lives at sea.’ The Atlantic 85 carries a full suite of communication and electronic navigation aids, including VHF radio, VHF direction finding, intercom, DGPS and electronic chart, radar and hand-held VHF, as well as a searchlight, night-vision equipment and illuminating paraflares for night-time operations. Charlie Jones, RNLI Council Member, will officially accept the boat on behalf of the RNLI.

Notes To Editors The Duke of Kent has been President of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) since 1969, succeeding his parents.

Where: Abersoch RNLI Lifeboat Station
When: Saturday 16 April, 2016 at 2.30pm
Event: Naming ceremony and service of dedication of Abersoch’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat. Bilingual interviews will be available. Please register your intention to attend by calling Danielle Rush on the telephone numbers below.

Abersoch RNLI New Year’s Day Dip 20161st of Jan 2016

Abersoch main beach will again be the place to be on New Year’s Day to get rid of your hangover by rushing into the sea for the annual Abersoch RNLI New Year’s Day dip. This year the fancy dress theme is ‘Pirates of Penrhyn Llŷn’. We are looking forward to seeing the usual imaginative interpretations of the theme, with fearsome pirates and their ladies dashing across the beach.
Let’s make an heroic effort to raise as much money as possible, as all money raised will go directly to the RNLI to help ensure that our local crew can be equipped with the best equipment, clothing and training when they go out to sea in any weather. It is expected that if you join the Dip you will raise some money for the crew, who will be on and in the water at the event to look after everybody’s safety, so to take part a sponsorship form is needed. Forms are available in the village at Abersoch Boatyard, Abersoch Watersports shop and Abersoch Tourist Office or can be downloaded in 2 pages by clicking here for Page 1 and clicking here for Page 2.
As usual the Dip will take place on the main beach at 12 noon prompt, and children will go in a couple of minutes before the adults. Hot drinks will be given to all dippers, in the beach café after the Dip.
In 2013 around 500 brave souls went into the sea, supported by around 2,000 spectators, so it is essential that you allow sufficient time to get through these crowds and the resultant traffic to get onto the beach before 12 o’clock. Each year we have seen disappointed people who didn’t manage to arrive in time for the Dip; we cannot delay the event as it would leave people waiting in the cold.

Abersoch RNLI SportiveSunday 4th October 2015

Abersoch RNLI Sportive 2015 Cycle Event
The Abersoch RNLI Sportive will be held on Sunday 4th October, and will be a non-competitive cycling event that starts and finishes at The Vaynol in the centre of Abersoch village. All money raised from the event will go towards Abersoch RNLI fundraising. The entry fee for single riders is £10 with a requirement to raise at least £15 in additional sponsorship, and for family groups the entry fee is £20 with a minimum sponsorship requirement of £20.

This will be the first time that Abersoch RNLI has run a sportive and we hope to make it an annual fundraising event.

We have decided to offer two routes: a 28 mile route for experienced cyclists, and a shorter route, which can be either 9½ or 16 miles, for families and those looking for an easier ride.

The 28 mile route (http://www.plotaroute.com/route/97624) will cross the peninsula and then go west to circle back round to Abersoch. Riders will leave Abersoch to go up to Mynytho, then go down through Rhydyclafdy and Dinas to a check point at The Lion in Tudweiliog. From there they will go south to Sarn Meyllteyrn, then through Bryncroes and Botwnnog to Hells Mouth and up to another check point at The Sun in Llanengan, then return to Abersoch. The route has 2,200 feet of climbing, with a long climb up from Abersoch to the top of the hill above Mynytho and several other challenging lengths of climbing further on.

The family route (http://www.plotaroute.com/route/97627) will be shorter and will use the lower land to the back of Hells Mouth to avoid the steep hills of the 28 mile route. Riders will leave Abersoch to go to Sarn Bach, then into Llanengan where they will start the circuit to Llangian and towards Botwnnog until they join the route of the 28 mile ride to come back to Hells Mouth. On entering Llanengan, where there will be a check point at The Sun, they can either do another circuit to give a total distance of 16 miles or return directly to Abersoch to give a distance of 9½ miles.

To enter on-line and obtain further information please go to the Eventbrite booking page:

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/abersoch-rnli-sportive-2015-registration-18147817611

Entries will also be taken on the day at The Vaynol, but this will be less convenient and may delay you starting the ride.

National Award for Local Lifeboat FundraisersSept 2015

Abersoch RNLI fundraising award 2015
Abersoch RNLI Fundraisers were honoured to receive a national award at a recent RNLI annual awards ceremony held in Liverpool. The award to the Abersoch branch was one of only three awarded nationally and was in recognition of its long and valuable service. Branch chairman Phill Brown said that he is proud that the branch has been able to consistently raise money to ensure that the local crew is always able to go out to sea supported by the best equipment. The framed certificate was presented to long serving Abersoch RNLI supporters Sue McGill and Joan Timmins.

Adele Fuller, RNLI Area Manager commented ‘We’re thrilled Abersoch has received our very special branch award. They work so hard to help save lives at sea and we’re all delighted their support has been recognised with this well deserved award.  Congratulations Abersoch fundraising team!’

Abersoch RNLI Sponsored New Year's Day Dip. Important Info20th of Dec 2013

Abersoch RNLI and the Abersoch RNLI New Year’s Day Dip Committee would like to clarify that, as in all previous years, the 2014 Dip is organised totally by RNLI volunteers, has safety cover in the water provided by the local lifeboat crew and is covered by RNLI insurance.  All proceeds from the dippers’ sponsorship money and the collection boxes on the day go directly to Abersoch RNLI; no commercial organisation is involved in any way.
The Dip Committee is very grateful for the support of local businesses who donate the hot chocolate and mince pies to be given to all dippers and to our volunteers who man the collection buckets, the information tent and the café.
Can we encourage all dippers to raise sponsorship for the RNLI, using the sponsorship form which can be downloaded here or by collecting a form from one of the outlets in the village or from the information tent on the day, or using the Virgin Money Giving Abersoch RNLI Dip event page.

If you are spectating and enjoying the spectacle, will you please give generously to one of the official collectors who will be wearing RNLI yellow jackets and holding official RNLI collection buckets.
We are looking forward to seeing record numbers dipping in the sea and supporting on the beach.

RNLI announces Photographer of the Year competition winner15th of November 2012

Volunteer lifeboat crew member Neville Murphy from Dunmore East in the Republic of Ireland has won the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) annual Photographer of the Year competition.
Second place went to volunteer inshore lifeboat crew member Paul Collins from Abersoch. His photo depicts a rescue which took place in September, when Abersoch lifeboat was called out to a powerboat with three people on board that was rapidly taking on water. On arrival at the scene, the crew found the three casualties in the sea and just two feet of the boat’s bow left protruding above the water. The crew returned the casualties safely to shore and later returned to make the boat safe, attaching a buoy to it, to mark it clearly to other vessels in the area.

Abersoch RNLI crew member short-listed for award8th of November 2012

Paul Collins, crew member from Abersoch has made the short-list of best entries in the RNLI’s annual Photographer of the Year competition.
For the first time in the competition’s seven-year history, the charity is inviting members of the public to visit its Facebook page, between 8 and 12 November, and vote for their favourite photo.
The competition, which the RNLI runs each year, is open to the charity’s volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards – celebrating their lifesaving work, captured through their own photographs.
This year, for just five days from 8–12 November, 12 short-listed entries are being showcased on a dedicated tab on the charity’s Facebook page and the public can place their votes there. The winning entry will be the photo with the most votes at 5pm on 12 November.
Those wishing to vote should visit the RNLI’s Facebook page – www.facebook.com/rnli – and click on the Photographer of the Year tab, where the short-listed photos are displayed for voting. Those who are not already fans of the RNLI Facebook page will be asked to ‘like’ the page in order to see the photos and place their vote.

If people are interested in volunteering to help or running for the RNLI, contact Claire at claire_timbrell@rnli.org.uk or tel 07824 607 401 and she can provide further details.
