Abersoch Inshore Lifeboat 2008

In addition to the shouts below, the Lifeboat crew have been paged to launch 1 time this year, but the launch was cancelled before the boat entered the water. The last time this happened was on the evening of of 20th August 2008.

The Lifeboat landed a crewman at the bottom of the cliffs as a marker for the Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team who sent a man to the casualty by abseiling down the cliffs. He reached the casualty and brought him down on the ropes to the cliff base where both were picked up by the Lifeboat.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
23rd Aug On the way back from the service below, Abersoch Lifeboat was asked to try and locate a small speedboat that had sunk between St. Tudwal's Islands during the afternoon. The crew spotted the bow of the boat sticking out of the water near St. Tudwal's West and managed to tow it back to Abersoch Harbour Beach.

The injury was assessed by a Lifeboat First Aider and it was found that the casualty had suspected rib/back injuries and was transferred to Abersoch Lifeboat on a stretcher and then to the Harbour Beach where paramedics and an air ambulance were waiting. The casualty was then airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19th Aug The Lifeboat was launched at approx 4.20pm to reports of persons in difficulties in the surf at Porth Neigwl. On arrival at the scene the body boarders involved had reached the beach, however it appears that 2 of them re-entered the water. The Coastguard shore team requested they leave the water and the Lifeboat searched the surfline to ensure on-one else was in difficulty and returned to station.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
18th Aug The Lifeboat was launched at approx 11.40am to an injured person on board a 41ft yacht just off Benar Headland. A Lifeboat crew member remained onboard the yacht and the Lifeboat returned to station.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
17th Aug The Lifeboat was launched at approx 3.15pm to reports of 2 surfers in difficulty at Porth Neigwl. The Lifeboat proceeded to the scene and it was ascertained that the persons were out of the water. However it was then found by the Coastguard shore team that one of the persons was having breathing difficulties so a Lifeboat First Aider was landed on the beach and oxygen was administered to the casualty. An Air Ambulance arrived and the Paramedics decided that the casualty should be checked out at hospital. The other person involved in the incident was treated for cold and mild shock in an ambulance.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On arrival of the Coastguards, the Lifeboat returned to station.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3rd Aug The Lifeboat was launched at approx 9.40pm after reports of 3 persons cut off by the tide at the western end of Porth Ceiriad. Coastguards witnessed the 3 persons climbing up the cliff to safety and after a thorough shoreline search, the Lifeboat returned to station at 10.50pm.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
26th July The Lifeboat was launched at approx 1.20pm to reports of a canoeist in difficulties near Bardsey Island. The canoeist had been spotted by a member of the public on the mainland who could see the canoeist waving his paddle for help. He had apparently ventured too far out of Aberdaron Bay towards Pen y Cil and got swept into Bardsey Sound by the strong tide running. Fortunately a passing yacht picked him up a mile or so into the sound. Abersoch Lifeboat went to the yacht and discovered that the canoeist was concerned about his 2 companions (a middle age man and young girl) who were also canoeing in Aberdaron Bay. These canoeists were spotted by Aberdaron Coastguards near Porth y Pistyll and Abersoch Lifeboat intercepted them to ensure they were OK. The Lifeboat then returned to the yacht and picked up the canoeist and returned him to his companions. It would appear that the canoeist was very fortunate not to have got into further difficulties due to the conditions in Bardsey Sound (severe overfalls and whirlpools despite there being no wind or swell), especially as he was not wearing a buoyancy aid and had no flares or form of communication or any knowledge of the dangers of this stretch of water.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
19th July The Lifeboat was launched at approx 5.30pm to a capsized catamaran (Mini Tornado) outside of Abersoch Moorings. One of the crew of the cat had already been taken onboard a yacht and the Lifeboat assisted the owner of the catamaran to right the vessel and it was then towed back to Abersoch Main Beach.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15th July The Lifeboat was launched at approx 6.40am after Coastguards were alerted by an EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) device on a yacht in the moorings. The yacht was located and it appeared that the EPIRB was faulty. It was retrieved from the 38ft vessel and disabled.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8th July The Lifeboat was launched at approx 4.30pm to a report of a semi submerged dory in Abersoch Bay that had been spotted by a yacht. It appears that the dory had come adrift from Abersoch Harbour and it was towed back to the Harbour Beach.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
26th June The Lifeboat was launched at approx 11.55am to a capsized sailing dinghy with 2 persons in the water near Abersoch moorings. The 2 adult males were brought onboard the Lifeboat and a Lifeboat crewmember righted the dinghy and it was then towed back to Abersoch Main Beach.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
17th June The Lifeboat was launched at approx 4pm to a rowing dinghy with 2 persons on board that was being blown downwind in Abersoch Bay off Benar Headland. The dinghy had launched at the Bwlchtocyn end of the main beach where conditions were sheltered, however there was a fresh to strong SW wind blowing in the bay at the time.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13th June The Lifeboat was launched at 3.00pm to reports of 3 people and an inflatable on Ynys Gwylan (Gull Island) SE of Aberdaron. The inflatable was the "toy" type with "toy" oars and it would appear that due to the wind direction and strong currents in the area, the trio had virtually no chance of getting back to Aberdaron. The trio at first refused to be taken to safety and appeared to have no idea of the danger they were putting themselves in. They had no lifejackets and no warm clothing. Eventually they were persuaded as to their predicament and were returned to the beach at Aberdaron. Potentially, this was 3 lives saved.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
10th June The Lifeboat was launched at 2.40pm to reports of 2 people in difficulty in the water from a jet ski off Porth Ceiriad. On arrival on scene, the Lifeboat found 2 persons in the water alongside a local fishing boat. The fisherman onboard was keeping one of the people from the jet ski (a young man) afloat with a rope looped under his arms, assisted by the other casualty in the water (a young woman). The young man was pulled onboard the Lifeboat conscious, but in a severe state of shock and was unable to assist himself. He was given oxygen and taken with the young woman back to Abersoch Lifeboat Station and a waiting ambulance. It is very likely that without the actions of the passing fisherman (who also raised the alarm) and his female companion, the outcome of this incident may have been very different. It was noted that neither casualty was wearing a wetsuit and the buoyancy aid on the young man was ill fitting. The Lifeboat re-launched to locate and recover the jet ski, which was towed back to the Harbour Beach.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7th June Whilst returning on exercise from Porth Neigwl, the Lifeboat was asked to assist a broken down powerboat in the bay off Abersoch. The powerboat, with 2 persons on board, was towed back to the Harbour Beach.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
26th May The Lifeboat launched at approx 1.30 pm to a windsurfer reported to be in difficulties off the Sarn Bach end of Abersoch Main Beach. Conditions in the bay were very rough with a strong to near gale onshore wind blowing and the casualty was located with the help of Abersoch Beach Control & Abersoch Coastguard. The casualty was found with his windsurf rig but had lost his board due to equipment failure and was in the process of self rescuing. The Lifeboat assisted him back to the beach. A net landing was required to retrieve the Lifeboat due to the very rough conditions off the Lifeboat Station.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
24th May The second shout of the day. The Lifeboat launched at approx 5.30 pm to a 19ft powerboat with mechanical failure approx 1 mile of Abersoch. The vessel had launched from Pwllheli and was towed through the choppy seas back to the Harbour Beach, Abersoch.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
15th May The Lifeboat launched at 3.10pm to a climber who had fallen from rocks at Llech y Doll. Coastguards and the RAF Sea King helicopter were on scene when the Lifeboat arrived and the Lifeboat stood by whilst the casualty was secured in a stretcher and airlifted to hospital. The casualtiy's injuries were not thought to be life threatening. Video footage taken from the RAF helicpter can be viewed by clicking here.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
